Your PTE Core result shows Writing 79. Listening, Reading and Speaking have reached CLB 9. Should you book another test?
First, check what those scores mean for immigration. For PTE Core CLB 9 in 2026, the minimum scores are Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88. Writing 79 converts to CLB 8. That difference can affect both your language points and your skill-transferability points.
Here is the score table, the CRS maths, and a practical plan for improving Writing without letting your other skills slip.
PTE Core vs PTE Academic for Canada PR (quick verdict)
IRCC accepts PTE Core for Express Entry; Academic is for study
If you choose Pearson's test for Express Entry, book PTE Core. IRCC also accepts other approved English tests, but PTE Academic cannot replace Core for this purpose. Academic is commonly used for university admission.
Before paying, read VerbalHub's guide to PTE Core requirements for Canadian immigration.
For PTE Core for Canada PR, distinguish eligibility from competitiveness. FSWP requires at least CLB 7 in every ability. CEC requires CLB 7 for TEER 0–1 occupations and CLB 5 for TEER 2–3. CLB 9 is a points target, rather than the minimum for everyone.
Official PTE Core → CLB conversion
CLB 7/8/9/10 per skill ranges (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing)
Use this PTE Core to CLB conversion table for each score separately.
| CLB level | Listening | Reading | Speaking | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 7 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 68–75 | 69–78 |
| CLB 8 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 76–83 | 79–87 |
| CLB 9 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 84–88 | 88–89 |
| CLB 10 | 89–90 | 88–90 | 89–90 | 90 |
These ranges match Pearson's published conversion table. The PTE Core CLB 9 cut-off differs across skills; "79 in everything" is not the correct target.
You receive four CLB levels, rather than one official "overall CLB". A strong PTE overall score cannot compensate for Writing below a required threshold.
Why CLB 9 is the CRS sweet spot (and how points are awarded skill-by-skill)
CRS per skill for single vs with-spouse; CLB 7→9 = +56 points (single)
Assuming English is your first official language, these are the principal applicant's core language points:
| CLB per ability | Without an accompanying spouse | With an accompanying spouse |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 17 | 16 |
| 8 | 23 | 22 |
| 9 | 31 | 29 |
| 10 or higher | 34 | 32 |
The spouse column describes your points, not your spouse's separate contribution. IRCC applies the relevant category to your circumstances.
Moving all four abilities from CLB 7 to CLB 9 gives:
- Without a spouse: 68 → 124, a gain of 56 points.
- With a spouse: 64 → 116, a gain of 52 points.
PTE Core CRS points can increase further through skill transferability. Reaching CLB 9 in every ability can raise the points awarded for language combined with education or foreign work experience. Existing points and category caps affect the actual gain.
That is why CLB 9 matters. CLB 10 still adds core language points, but clearing your final CLB 9 threshold often deserves priority.
The Writing 88+ bottleneck: why 79 is only CLB 8
Writing 79 = CLB 8; CLB 9 starts at 88; decision path for retake
Writing 79–87 remains CLB 8. Writing 88–89 reaches CLB 9. Improving from 79 to 87 shows progress, but does not change the Writing CLB used for CRS.
Before booking again:
- Convert all four scores.
- Calculate your current CRS.
- Recalculate with Writing 88 and the other scores unchanged.
- Check whether your practice supports that improvement.
Do not assume Write Email caused the entire shortfall. Writing draws on several tasks, including integrated tasks. Review your Skills Profile, summaries, dictation and fill-in-the-blank accuracy alongside emails.
Your PTE Core Writing 79 to 88 plan should follow the errors you actually make.
How to raise Writing to 88+ on PTE Core
Write Email task focus (tone, bullet coverage, conventions)
Pearson gives you nine minutes for Write Email. Its task instructions ask for 80–120 words. Aim comfortably within that range and answer all three prompt bullets.
Start with three decisions: Who is reading? Why are you writing? What must happen next?
A complaint to a property manager needs a polite, firm tone. An invitation to a friend can sound warmer.
For a faulty-heater complaint, useful detail might be:
"The bedroom heater has stopped working, and the room becomes very cold at night. Could you arrange a repair before Friday?"
The problem, consequence and request are clear.
Check five things before submitting:
- Coverage: Every bullet receives a direct answer.
- Tone: The language suits the reader.
- Conventions: Include a greeting and appropriate closing.
- Accuracy: Check verbs, articles, punctuation and spelling.
- Length: Remove repetition before adding more detail.
Try one minute to plan, six to write and two to review. Use VerbalHub's guide to master the Write Email task for CLB 9, while remembering that your target skill score is 88.
Use flexible frameworks, not memorised scripts
Use a simple structure: greeting, purpose, required details, requested action and closing. Write the sentences around the actual situation.
A polished opening cannot rescue an email that misses a bullet. Practise complaints, requests, apologies and invitations so you can adapt naturally.
Also, keep the scoring updates straight. Pearson's August 2025 changes involving human review of selected responses applied to PTE Academic and Academic UKVI. Pearson explicitly stated that Core was unchanged by those updates. Do not treat those announcements as a new Core scoring rule.
VerbalHub's PTE Exam Pattern Changes 2026 guide mainly discusses Academic. Check Core-specific instructions when planning your timing.
Retake strategy when three skills are CLB 9 and Writing is 79
Risk/reward math; validity (2 years); timing before draws
For a candidate without an accompanying spouse, raising Writing from CLB 8 to 9 adds eight core language points. With an accompanying spouse, it adds seven.
The larger reward may come from clearing the all-four-skills transferability threshold. For example, a candidate with a master's degree and at least three years of qualifying foreign work experience could gain another 50 points, assuming no other transferability combinations already use the relevant caps. That makes the possible gain 58 points without a spouse, under those assumptions.
Treat this as a full-test preparation decision. Maintain Listening, Reading and Speaking while concentrating on Writing. A fall below CLB 9 elsewhere could prevent the intended benefit.
A practical three-week schedule:
- Week 1: Diagnose errors; write and correct one email daily.
- Week 2: Complete timed emails and review other Writing-contributing tasks.
- Week 3: Take realistic full mocks; maintain all four skills.
This is a preparation window, not a guaranteed nine-point increase.
Results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and submit your PR application. Leave time for results and profile updates; avoid booking around an assumed draw date.
Worked examples (4-score profiles → CLB → CRS)
The figures below show core first-language CRS points, not complete CRS totals. Age, education, work experience and other factors are still needed.
Example 1: L82/R78/S84/W79 → minimum CLB 8, CRS loss from Writing
| Skill | PTE score | CLB | Points without spouse | Points with spouse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 82 | 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Reading | 78 | 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Speaking | 84 | 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Writing | 79 | 8 | 23 | 22 |
| Total | — | — | 116 | 109 |
The profile is 9/9/9/8, rather than officially "overall CLB 8". Writing 88 would raise the totals to 124 or 116, respectively, before any transferability increase.
Example 2: L89/R80/S90/W70 → minimum CLB 7, but higher CRS in some skills
| Skill | PTE score | CLB | Points without spouse | Points with spouse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 89 | 10 | 34 | 32 |
| Reading | 80 | 9 | 31 | 29 |
| Speaking | 90 | 10 | 34 | 32 |
| Writing | 70 | 7 | 17 | 16 |
| Total | — | — | 116 | 109 |
This profile earns more in Listening and Speaking, but fewer in Writing. Its core language total equals Example 1's total. Both miss the all-four-at-CLB-9 threshold.
These calculations apply the official conversion ranges and CRS table. A minimum CLB alone cannot tell you which profile earns more language points.

Frequently Asked Questions
You need at least 82 in Listening, 78 in Reading, 84 in Speaking and 88 in Writing. Each skill converts separately to a CLB level, so check all four scores rather than your overall result.
No. If you choose a Pearson test for Express Entry, you must take PTE Core. A PTE Academic result cannot replace it, even if your scores are high.
No. Writing 79–87 is CLB 8, while 88–89 is CLB 9. Raising Writing from 79 to 87 improves your test performance but does not move you into the next CLB bracket.
No. Express Entry assesses your language abilities separately. Strong Listening, Reading and Speaking scores cannot turn Writing 79 into CLB 9. You must reach the required cut-off in each ability.
With English as your first official language, CLB 9 in all four abilities gives 124 core language points without an accompanying spouse or 116 with an accompanying spouse. These are language points, not your complete CRS score.
Yes, if all four abilities rise from CLB 7 to CLB 9 and you are assessed without an accompanying spouse. The core language gain is 56 points. With an accompanying spouse, it is 52 points. Your transferability points may also increase.
Reaching CLB 9 across all four abilities can unlock higher skill-transferability points for language combined with education or foreign work experience. One ability below CLB 9 can keep you in a lower bracket. Your actual gain depends on your qualifications, experience and existing points.
No. For English as the first official language, FSWP requires at least CLB 7 in all four abilities. CEC requires CLB 7 for TEER 0–1 occupations and CLB 5 for TEER 2–3. CLB 9 is a useful CRS target rather than a universal eligibility requirement.
Calculate the potential CRS gain first. A retake may be worthwhile if Writing is blocking valuable language and transferability points. Before booking, confirm that your timed Writing performance has improved and that your other three skills remain stable.
Start by identifying recurring errors. Practise covering every email bullet, choosing an appropriate tone, organising details clearly and checking grammar. Review other tasks that contribute to Writing too. Use timed practice and specific feedback; repeating the same mistakes in more mocks rarely solves the problem.
No. Three weeks can provide a focused practice window, but your progress depends on your starting level, errors and feedback. Book the retake when your performance becomes consistent, rather than simply when the three weeks end.
Your language results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent residence application. Check the expiry date before planning a retake or submitting your application.
No. CLB 9 can improve your CRS, but an invitation also depends on your complete profile and the requirements of the invitation round. Treat it as a valuable language target, not a promise of selection.
VerbalHub can help you review your score report, identify language gaps and build a focused practice schedule. Bring your four skill scores and recent Writing responses so the review can address the specific errors holding you back.
