Choosing between PTE Core and PTE Academic is less about which test feels easier and more about which one your destination accepts. In 2026, the simple starting point is Canada PR → PTE Core; Australia and New Zealand migration or study → PTE Academic. For UK study, check whether your course and visa require PTE Academic UKVI. PTE Core vs Academic — purpose and acceptance
Both tests assess Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing on a 10–90 scale. They serve different purposes, and the authority reviewing your application decides which result it accepts.
- PTE Core is designed for Canadian immigration. IRCC accepts it for Express Entry, and it is used in eligible citizenship and work-permit routes. Check the requirements of your particular program.
- PTE Academic is used for university admissions and is among the accepted tests for Australian visas and New Zealand skilled residence. For a UK visa that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT), book the approved PTE Academic UKVI version.

Canada: PTE Academic is not an approved English test for Express Entry. PTE Core is listed by IRCC. Requirements for work permits and citizenship vary by route; citizenship language proof focuses on Speaking and Listening.
Australia: The Department of Home Affairs lists PTE Academic for visa English requirements. PTE Core is not the PTE option listed for skilled migration. Universities may set a different admission score from the visa minimum.
New Zealand: Immigration New Zealand lists PTE Academic for skilled residence, while schools and universities set their own admission rules.

Canada PR: PTE Core and CLB 9
For Express Entry, IRCC maps each PTE Core skill separately. These are the minimum scores that reach CLB 9; the exact CLB level for a higher score follows IRCC's published ranges.

A score of 79 in Writing or Speaking does not meet CLB 9. Check the required CLB for your own immigration program and your full score profile.
Australia PR: PTE Academic Superior English
For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, Australia's Superior English thresholds are Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85 and Speaking 88. Superior English can contribute 20 points in the skilled-migration points test where applicable. Older test results use the earlier table and may still be valid for eligible visas.
These are separate skill minimums. Give Writing and Speaking enough time in your preparation, while keeping Listening and Reading above their required scores.
