Why IIM Shillong Stands Out

The institute combines a mainstream management curriculum with a strong focus on responsible leadership, sustainability and the economic setting of India's North East. Its residential campus, international links, student-led committees and industry engagement create a learning experience that is broader than lectures and examinations.

  • A growing national recruiter base and strong placement outcomes
  • A new five-year IPM route for students after Class 12
  • Separate formats for early-career applicants and experienced professionals
  • Full-time and working-professional doctoral options
  • Executive education for companies, faculty members and individual managers
  • A residential setting that encourages close peer learning

Post Graduate Programme Leading to MBA

The two-year Post Graduate Programme is IIM Shillong's flagship residential MBA. The first year builds a common foundation across accounting, economics, finance, marketing, operations, strategy, organisational behaviour, analytics, communication and ethics. The second year allows students to shape their path through electives and career interests.

Eligibility and selection

For the 2026-28 batch, applicants need a recognised bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. The minimum is 45% for SC, ST and differently abled candidates under the published rule. Domestic candidates apply through CAT. Eligible overseas candidates who cannot take CAT because of residence outside India may apply with GMAT.

The institute's batch-specific policy governs shortlisting and final selection. CAT performance, academics, work experience, diversity and Personal Interview performance may all matter. A published minimum percentile is only an eligibility screen; it is not a guaranteed interview call.

Who should consider the PGP

  • Graduates seeking a broad two-year MBA
  • Early-career applicants who want structured internships and final placements
  • Professionals with limited work experience who still benefit from a summer internship
  • Applicants comfortable with a residential programme and a demanding academic calendar

Integrated Programme in Management

IPM Preparation Roadmap - IIM Shillong - VerbalHub

IIM Shillong's five-year IPM brings undergraduate and postgraduate management education into one route. It is fully residential and aligned with the flexibility of the National Education Policy. Students can earn an exit credential or BBA at defined stages if they meet the academic rules; those who complete the full programme move into the management phase under the institute's structure.

IPM 2026 eligibility

  • At least 70% in Class X and Class XII for the general route, with 65% for SC, ST and DA candidates
  • Mathematics or Applied Mathematics studied in Classes XI and XII
  • Domestic applicants must appear for the IIM Indore IPM Aptitude Test
  • Overseas applicants may use a qualifying SAT taken within the stated period
  • Shortlisted applicants attend an online Personal Interview

For the 2026-31 batch, the age rule required candidates to be born on or after 1 August 2006, with the published relaxation for SC, ST and DA applicants. Future batches may use new dates, so students should not copy the 2026 date into a later application.

IPM fee structure

The published tuition fee is ₹3.05 lakh per year for each of the first three years, with non-academic expenses of ₹76,000 per year. Years four and five follow the prevailing PGP fee. A ₹10,000 alumni fee and ₹20,000 refundable caution deposit apply at admission. Mess, local and global immersion, study abroad and personal expenses are additional.

Post Graduate Programme for Executives

PGPEx is a one-year full-time residential MBA for experienced professionals. It is designed for managers who can take a career break and want an intensive transition into wider leadership, strategy or cross-functional roles. The programme includes functional management, problem solving, sustainability, emerging technology, peer learning and international exposure.

PGPEx 2027 admission route

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least 50% marks
  • At least five years of full-time work experience after graduation by 31 March 2027
  • Minimum CAT overall percentile of 50 or GMAT overall score of 500 under the current policy
  • CAT scores from the last two years or valid GMAT scores from the last five years
  • Shortlisting followed by Group Discussion and/or Personal Interview

The published PGPEx fee page currently lists about ₹22.76 lakh including academic fee, non-academic components and refundable security deposit, with international immersion charged at actual cost. Applicants should confirm the active 2027-28 fee notice before accepting an offer.

MBA for Working Executives

The two-year MBA for Working Executives is built for professionals who want to continue working. Live online classes are normally scheduled on weekends, with Thursday evenings kept as a reserve window and campus immersion built into the design. The workload still includes assessments, group projects and attendance expectations.

Applicants may take IIM Shillong's written eligibility test. Under the current policy, candidates with at least the stated CAT percentile or GMAT score can receive an exemption. The 2026-28 published programme schedule totals ₹12.70 lakh, including academic, alumni and campus-immersion components, plus a refundable security deposit under the fee table.

  • Best for professionals who cannot leave employment
  • Requires reliable weekend availability and employer or family support
  • Does not offer the same residential experience as the two-year PGP
  • Career value depends on present role, experience and how the degree is used

Doctoral Programme

The four-year full-time residential doctoral programme prepares candidates for research, teaching, policy and advanced industry work. Students complete research-focused coursework before moving into comprehensive evaluation, proposal development and thesis work. Areas typically span management disciplines such as economics, finance, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour, strategy, information systems and public policy.

The 2026 process accepts eligible scores from CAT, GATE, GRE, GMAT, UGC NET and CSIR UGC NET in relevant areas. The institute publishes financial support for eligible full-time scholars, along with research-related grants. Terms can change, so applicants should read the active doctoral finance page.

Doctoral Programme for Working Professionals

The working-professional PhD is for experienced managers and specialists who want to research a serious problem without leaving their careers. It remains a rigorous doctoral programme with coursework, residencies, research milestones and a thesis. It should not be confused with a short executive certificate.

The current admission route recognises valid GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, UGC NET and CSIR UGC NET scores. Applicants also need a credible research interest, enough time for residencies and coursework, and a realistic plan for balancing professional and academic responsibilities.

Executive Education and Certificate Learning

Beyond degree programmes, IIM Shillong runs Management Development Programmes, Faculty Development Programmes and certificate programmes. These may be open-enrolment, customised for organisations or delivered with programme partners. Duration can range from short workshops to longer executive formats.

  • Check whether the credential is a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Compare direct IIM faculty contact and assessment depth
  • Read the delivery mode and campus-immersion terms
  • Check who awards the credential when a technology partner is involved
  • Choose the programme for a specific skill or career need rather than the brand name alone

IIM Shillong does not use one exam for every programme. Start with the degree you want, then read that programme's policy. Preparing for GMAT when the domestic PGP needs CAT — or preparing for a generic IPMAT without studying the IIM Indore pattern — can waste valuable time.

How to Prepare for the Entrance Tests

CAT preparation

Build Arithmetic and Algebra, practise DILR every week and read RC passages for structure rather than isolated facts. Begin mocks early enough to improve question selection. After each mock, record what went wrong, why it happened and when you will retest it.

IPMAT and SAT preparation

School students need a plan that protects board preparation. IPMAT requires strong Quantitative Ability and Verbal Ability, while SAT combines Reading and Writing with Math. The foundations overlap, but the timing, question style and application routes differ. Shift to exam-specific mocks after the basics are stable.

GMAT and GRE preparation

Working professionals should choose between GMAT and GRE only after checking eligibility for every target programme. GMAT needs Verbal, Quant and Data Insights; GRE adds sustained vocabulary work and Analytical Writing. A short diagnostic test often saves weeks of studying for the wrong exam.

Placements for the PGP 2024-26 Batch

The latest official final-placement report records complete placement for all 393 students. It reports 147 recruiters, including 51 new recruiters, and 102 PPO or PPI offers. The close gap between the average and median is useful because it gives applicants a better sense of the middle of the batch.

Campus Life in Shillong

IIM Shillong's campus is at Umsawli in East Khasi Hills. The residential environment brings together classes, group work, committees, clubs, competitions, sports, cultural events and recruitment preparation. The hill setting and cooler climate are attractive, but students should also plan for heavy monsoon weather and travel time from Guwahati airport or railway connections.

  • Residential hostels and academic facilities
  • Student Council, committees and activity clubs
  • Cultural, sports and entrepreneurship events
  • International relations and exchange activity
  • Library, digital resources and technology-enabled classrooms
  • Incubation and regional-development engagement through institute centres

Shillong's music, food and Khasi culture add to the experience, but the academic calendar remains intense. Students often handle classes, assignments, committees, competitions and internship or placement preparation at the same time.

Scholarships, Financial Aid and Education Loans

IIM Shillong has a Need Based Financial Assistance scheme for economically weaker PGP participants. Eligible students may also apply for the Government of India Top Class Scholarship for SC students and relevant support for SC, ST and persons with disabilities through the National Scholarship Portal.

  • Read eligibility before admission instead of assuming aid is automatic
  • Keep income certificates, tax returns, bank statements and category documents ready
  • Separate refundable deposits from tuition and living expenses
  • Apply for education loans early but compare interest and repayment terms
  • For IPM calculate all five years including the prevailing PGP fee in years four and five
  • For PGPEx include lost salary and international immersion in the budget

Building a Strong IIM Shillong Application

Building a Strong IIM Shillong Application - VerbalHub

A test score opens the door, but the rest of the application must make sense. The interview panel needs to understand what you have done, what you learned, why this programme fits now and how you will use it.

  • Prepare a clear explanation for programme choice
  • Use specific examples of responsibility, leadership and teamwork
  • Explain low marks or career gaps honestly and briefly
  • Know your graduation subjects, work role and current affairs
  • Connect short-term goals with realistic roles and industries
  • Practise structured answers without memorising a speech

Use VerbalHub's MBA profile-building strategy and MBA profile evaluation guide to connect test preparation with the interview and application story.

Hasan Raja Sir and VerbalHub Support

The same reasoning-first approach supports CAT VARC, GMAT Verbal, GRE Verbal, IPM Verbal Ability, SAT Reading and Writing, and MBA interviews.

  • Diagnostic test and personal study plan
  • Small live batches and one-to-one mentoring
  • Section-wise accuracy, timing and selection review
  • Mock analysis and error-log follow-up
