Rules, fees, acceptance by country and when to choose OSR
If you missed your target IELTS band in one skill, One Skill Retake (OSR) may save you time and money—but only if your university, visa route or professional body accepts it. This guide explains eligibility, local fees, acceptance and a simple way to choose between OSR and a full retake.
What Is IELTS One Skill Retake?
IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake one section—Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking—after a full IELTS on computer test, instead of repeating all four. It is available for IELTS Academic and General Training at participating centres. You receive a new Test Report Form with your new score and the other three original scores; you may also use your original report.
Eligibility
- Your original full test must be an IELTS on computer test taken at a centre offering OSR.
- You must book and sit the retake within 60 days of the original test date. Only one OSR is allowed per full test.
- Retake the same test type—Academic or General Training—and confirm the available centre and test mode when booking.
- IELTS normally releases OSR results within 3–5 days.
VerbalHub note: A traditional full paper-based IELTS test does not qualify. In 2026, IELTS began moving to computer delivery in stages and introduced a Writing on Paper option in selected markets. If you chose Writing on Paper, a Writing retake must use the same mode. Check your booking and centre before deciding.

OSR Fees by Country in 2026
There is no single worldwide OSR fee. Prices and available sessions depend on the country and test centre. Compare the quoted OSR fee with the price of a full IELTS test before you book.
- India: Ask your chosen centre for its current OSR price and available dates.
- UK: Confirm the fee for your specific IELTS or IELTS for UKVI booking.
- Australia and Canada: Check the local centre's fee and whether your intended recipient accepts OSR.
- UAE and Singapore: Confirm the current fee and centre availability before paying.
Tip: A cheaper retake is useful only when the organisation receiving your result accepts the new report.

Acceptance by Goal and Country
OSR acceptance is not universal. The university, immigration authority, employer or professional regulator decides whether it accepts an OSR report. Check that policy before paying.
Canada Express Entry and provincial routes
Canada's immigration authority explicitly says it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. For a provincial nominee route, check that province's current language evidence rules and any federal stage. If you need a result for Express Entry, plan a full retake.
UK visas and immigration
IELTS says UKVI accepts OSR for IELTS Academic and General Training on computer in selected locations. Your visa route may require an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI, taken at an approved location. Confirm the exact test and OSR eligibility with the provider and your route before booking.
Australia and New Zealand
Australia lists IELTS Academic and General Training results including OSR for eligible visas, but requirements can differ by visa subclass; some routes do not accept single-skill retakes. New Zealand accepts OSR for certain visa categories. Check the exact visa rules as well as your university's admissions policy.
Universities and professional bodies
Universities and professional councils set their own rules. Ask the admissions office or regulator whether an OSR Test Report Form meets its English requirement, including any minimum score in each skill.

2–3 Week OSR Prep Plan
If OSR works for your goal, use the 60-day window carefully. Focus on the skill you need to improve, keep a record of mistakes and review your timed work.
Week 1: Diagnostic and error log
- Take a skill-specific practice test—for example, a Writing Task 2 essay or a Speaking Part 2 and Part 3 set.
- Record why you lost marks: task response, organisation, vocabulary and grammar in Writing; fluency and pronunciation in Speaking; True/False/Not Given choices in Reading; or distractors in Listening.
- Compare your work with the official band descriptors so you know what to fix.
Week 2: Targeted practice
- Writing: Practise clear four-paragraph essays and leave time to check your answer. Use word and time targets as a guide, not a rule.
- Speaking: Use the one-minute preparation time to note your main points, then record and review your answer.
- Reading: Practise True/False/Not Given questions and check the exact evidence for every answer.
- Listening: Review changes in names, numbers, dates, comparisons and locations that lead to wrong answers.
Week 3: Timed practice and feedback
- Complete two or three timed practice tests for your chosen skill.
- Ask a mentor to review the specific problems that keep appearing—for example, unclear paragraph ideas, awkward word choice or rushed speech.
- Book a date that leaves enough room for preparation and ensures you sit OSR within 60 days of the original test.

Common Mistakes That Waste an OSR Attempt
- Ignoring the band descriptors: Practising without checking what the examiner assesses makes it harder to spot your real weakness.
- Relying on memorised answers: A prepared line may not fit the task. Practise explaining your own ideas clearly.
- Poor time management: Leave enough time to plan and check Writing answers; use the one-minute preparation time in Speaking.
- Booking before checking acceptance: Confirm that your university, visa route or regulator accepts the new report.

Study Abroad Guidance
Your study or visa goal should guide the retake decision. A university may accept OSR even when a later immigration route has different rules.

Reading
- For True/False/Not Given, distinguish a statement contradicted by the passage from one the passage never confirms.
- Practise highlighting, moving between questions and keeping track of time on screen.
Listening
- Practise multiple-choice and map questions, and note the distractors that catch you.
- After each test, listen again and write down why your first answer was wrong.
