What the GMAT Data Insights Section Tests

2 minutes and 15 seconds per question is the average time for this section. That is only an average. A clean Graphics Interpretation question may take 75-90 seconds. A dense Multi-Source Reasoning set may need closer to three minutes. Your aim is not identical timing. Your aim is controlled timing.
No partial credit
On multi-part Data Insights questions, treat every response as part of one complete answer. If one required selection is wrong, the question is not fully correct. Check each column or statement before moving on.
Question Review and Edit
At the end of a section, you may review your answers and edit up to three responses if time remains. Bookmark only questions with a clear reason to revisit. Do not use the feature as permission to rush through the first attempt.

Build the Core Skills Before Timed Sets
Quantitative foundations
Revise the tools that appear across several DI formats:
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Ratios and proportions
- Averages and weighted averages
- Rates, work and speed
- Basic algebra and inequalities
- Statistics, sets and probability
- Estimation and approximation
You do not need advanced mathematics. You do need quick recognition. Seeing 12.5% as one-eighth, or an increase from 80 to 100 as 25%, can save both time and calculator clicks.
Data interpretation
Train yourself to check units, time periods, labels and definitions before interpreting a value. Practise the difference between percentages and percentage-point changes, totals and averages, and correlation and causation.

Verbal and logical reasoning
Data Insights is not a second Quant section. You may need to separate evidence from conclusion, spot an assumption, decide whether a source supports a claim or compare two written positions.

Data Sufficiency
Data Sufficiency asks whether the information is enough, not whether you can complete a long solution. Use this sequence:
- Define exactly what the question asks.
- Note restrictions such as positive integers or distinct values.
- Test Statement 1 alone.
- Test Statement 2 alone.
- Combine them only if neither works alone.
- Stop as soon as sufficiency is proved.
If the question asks for a value, the statements must lead to one unique value. If it asks a yes-or-no question, a definite yes or a definite no is sufficient. Test zero, fractions and negative values whenever the wording allows them.
A Clear Strategy for Each DI Question Type
Multi-Source Reasoning
Do not read every tab in detail first. Build a quick map, read the question and open the source most likely to contain the needed fact.
- Tab 1: background and definitions
- Tab 2: numerical data
- Tab 3: recommendations or conclusions
Check whether sources use the same units, time periods and definitions. Two statements can both be accurate while referring to different frames.
Table Analysis
Sort only when the question gives you a reason. First identify the relevant variable, condition and column. Then decide whether you need an exact value, a range or a count. Check for rounded values, missing entries and duplicate categories.
Graphics Interpretation
Start with the title, axes, units, scale, legend, time period and footnotes. Estimate the likely answer before opening the options. If the choices are far apart, an exact calculation may add time without adding confidence.
Two-Part Analysis
Treat the columns as connected, but solve the more restricted part first. One forced choice can reduce the work needed for the second. Translate quantitative conditions into short equations. In verbal sets, state the role of each choice before selecting it.
An Eight-Week GMAT DI Study Plan
This plan assumes 60-90 minutes on most weekdays and two to three hours across the weekend. Adjust the volume after your diagnostic, but keep the sequence.

On a difficult workday, use a minimum-study rule: solve three questions and review one old mistake. Fifteen useful minutes protect the habit better than waiting for a perfect free evening.

Use the Calculator With a Reason
Use the calculator for awkward multiplication, multi-step percentage work, close comparisons or calculations involving several data points. Avoid it for simple fractions, obvious comparisons and questions that only ask whether the information is sufficient.
Turn the Error Log Into a Training Tool
A useful error log reminds you why your decision got failed. Writing only the right option gives you very little to practise next time.

How to Add Mocks Without Wasting Them
A mock test diagnoses your current performance. It does not fix the weaknesses by itself. After each mock, identify the two or three issues with the biggest score impact and practise those before taking another full test.
Use a realistic testing environment such as the GMAT mock test series when you are ready to test pacing, stamina and section-level decisions.
During review, track:
- Accuracy by question type
- Accuracy in the first and second halves
- Time spent on wrong answers
- Slow correct answers
- Calculator dependence
- Performance after one difficult question

Practising only comfortable formats
A balanced DI score needs control across all five types. Do not hide in tables and graphs if Data Sufficiency is the real weakness.
Chasing speed too early
Rushed practice builds rushed habits. First make the method dependable. Then reduce time in small steps.
Collecting too many resources
One clear concept source, official-quality questions and a serious review system are enough. Resource switching often feels productive but delays mastery.
Taking mocks without repair work
Leave time between mocks to correct the specific weaknesses the test exposed.
Studying only when the calendar looks empty
A free evening may never arrive. Schedule preparation like a meeting and keep the minimum-study rule for difficult days.
