"Sir, if I score 99 percentile, will I get into an IIM?"
A strong CAT score helps, but admission takes more than one number. Your sectional scores, academic record, interview performance and the particular IIM's selection formula all matter.
Two students with the same percentile can receive different interview calls. After interviews, the student with the higher CAT score may still miss admission.
Understanding the CAT 2026 IIM selection criteria helps you prepare for both challenges: getting an interview call and turning that call into an offer.
First, understand which admission year you are checking
CAT 2026 generally leads to admission to the 2027-29 MBA/PGP batch. Admission to the 2026-28 batch was based on CAT 2025.
This matters because search results often mix the two cycles. IIM Ahmedabad has published its official 2027-29 policy. For the other IIMs discussed below, the comparison uses the official 2026-28 policies verified for this article as reference points. Check their applicable 2027-29 documents before relying on any figure: IIM A, IIM B, IIM C, IIM L, IIM I and IIM K.
1. You must meet eligibility and cutoff requirements
An IIM first checks whether you meet its academic eligibility, category requirements and CAT thresholds.
For example, IIM Ahmedabad's 2027-29 policy requires a bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks, relaxed to 45% for SC, ST and PwD applicants. Eligible final-year students can also apply, subject to completion and document deadlines. Other programme-specific requirements must be checked separately.
2. Eligible candidates compete for interview calls
Crossing the minimum CAT cutoff usually means you can be considered. It does not mean you will receive a call.
Under IIM shortlisting criteria after CAT, institutes may combine CAT performance with school marks, graduation marks, work experience and diversity factors. The resulting shortlist score determines who proceeds.
At IIM Bangalore, for example, the verified 2026-28 pre-interview formula assigns 55 points to CAT and the remaining points to academics, work experience or professional qualifications, and gender diversity.
3. You attend the required assessment stages
Depending on the institute, these can include:
- WAT: A written response that tests clarity, reasoning and organisation.
- AWT: Ahmedabad's Analytical Writing Test.
- PI: A personal interview covering your background, knowledge, choices and goals.
- GD: A group discussion, where specifically required.
Do not assume every IIM conducts all three stages. The verified policies for Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow and Kozhikode include writing and interview assessments; Indore's policy specifies PI.
4. Each IIM prepares its final merit list
After assessment, the institute calculates a final composite score. Offers and waitlists follow its merit list, reservation rules and available seats.
Your responsibility continues after selection: respond to offers, pay the required acceptance amount and complete document verification within the stated deadlines. Missing these steps can cost you the seat.
CAT sectional cutoffs versus overall cutoffs
Your overall percentile reflects your combined performance. Sectional percentiles show your performance separately in VARC, DILR and QA.
Suppose you achieve 98 overall but 72 in QA. An IIM requiring 80 in every section can reject your application at the cutoff stage, despite the strong total.
The following figures are minimum thresholds for General/Open, non-PwD applicants — not guaranteed interview-call percentiles.
| IIM | Policy reference | Overall minimum | Sectional minimums |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad | CAT 2026, batch 2027-29 | 95 | 85 in each section |
| Bangalore | Historical reference displayed in verified 2026-28 policy* | 85 | VARC 80; DILR 75; QA 75 |
| Calcutta | CAT 2025, batch 2026-28 | 85 | VARC 80; DILR 80; QA 75 |
| Lucknow, flagship MBA | CAT 2025, batch 2026-28 | 90 | 85 in each section |
| Indore | CAT 2025, batch 2026-28 | 90 | 80 in each section |
| Kozhikode | CAT 2025, batch 2026-28 | 85 | 75 in each section |
*Bangalore's verified document displays the preceding cycle's cutoff reference and explicitly notes that interview candidates scored higher.
Category-specific thresholds differ. Always read the correct category row, including applicable PwD provisions.
For your CAT 2026 cutoff for IIMs planning, treat minimums as eligibility floors. Build enough sectional strength that one difficult section does not remove otherwise suitable options.
CAT score weightage in IIMs: why the institute matters
Shortlisting weightage and final-selection weightage are different. A factor that helps you receive a call may carry fewer points after the interview.
Here is a practical comparison.
| IIM and policy reference | Interview-shortlist score | Final-selection score |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad, 2027-29 | Raw score: CAT percentile 65%, application rating 35%; followed by discipline-based normalisation | PI 50%, AWT 10%, normalised shortlist composite 40% |
| Bangalore, 2026-28 reference | CAT 55%; Class 10, Class 12 and graduation 10% each; work experience/professional course 10%; gender diversity 5% | CAT 25%, PI 40%, WAT 10%, academics 15%, work experience/professional course 10% |
| Calcutta, 2026-28 reference | CAT 56 points, Class 10: 10, Class 12: 15, gender diversity: 4; total 85 points | CAT 30%, PI 48%, WAT 8%, academic diversity 6%, work experience 8% |
| Lucknow MBA, 2026-28 reference | CAT 60%, Class 12: 10%, graduation 10%, work experience 10%, academic and gender diversity 5% each | CAT 30%, PI 40%, WAT 10%, academics 10%, diversity 5%, work experience 5% |
| Indore, 2026-28 reference | CAT sections 55 points, Class 10: 10, Class 12: 25, diversity: 7, work experience: up to 3 | CAT sections 40%, PI 45%, school academics 10%, diversity 5% |
| Kozhikode, 2026-28 reference | CAT 50%, Class 10: 15%, Class 12: 20%, diversity up to 10%, work experience 5% | CAT 35%, PI 35%, WAT 20%, résumé score 10% |

The lesson is simple: a high percentile gets you into competition; strong interview preparation helps you finish it.
IIM composite score calculation, explained simply
A composite score combines several assessed components into one total.
Imagine a hypothetical formula with CAT worth 40 points, PI worth 40, academics worth 10 and work experience worth 10. Your assessed contributions might be:
- CAT: 32
- PI: 28
- Academics: 8
- Work experience: 6
Your composite score would be 74 out of 100.
However, 99 percentile does not automatically mean you receive 99% of the CAT component. Institutes use different calculations involving scaled scores, percentiles, rating bands or normalised values.
For example, Calcutta's verified shortlist policy calculates CAT points using the candidate's scaled score divided by the maximum possible scaled score, multiplied by 56.
Latest CAT 2026 changes for IIM admission
Ahmedabad's published policy deserves careful attention
Its 2027-29 policy uses common percentage-rating bands for Class 10, Class 12 and graduation. The application rating also includes work experience and gender.
The shortlist calculation combines CAT percentile with the application rating, then normalises the composite within undergraduate disciplines. The final formula gives 50% to PI, 10% to AWT and 40% to the normalised shortlist composite.
Therefore, copying an older Ahmedabad calculator can produce a misleading estimate.
CAP and JAP must be checked by admission cycle
For admission in 2026 through CAT 2025, JAP 2026 covered Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi and Tiruchirappalli. Registration, interview shortlisting and PI were shared, while Raipur prepared its own final merit list.
CAP 2026 covered Bodh Gaya, Jammu and Sirmaur. These names describe the completed 2026 admission cycle; CAT 2026 aspirants must check the announcements applicable to admission in 2027.
Shared assessments save candidates repeated interviews. They do not create one identical admission formula for every participating institute.
How academics, work experience and diversity affect admission
Your academic record matters differently across IIMs
School marks can influence interview calls substantially. Graduation marks receive explicit shortlist points at Bangalore and Lucknow, while Calcutta's verified shortlist formula does not give them a separate component.
You cannot change your Class 10 result now. You can improve current college performance, CAT preparation and interview readiness. Choose target institutes after examining the whole formula.
Work experience means more than a job title
Rules commonly distinguish qualifying employment from internships, unpaid work and training. Counting dates and scoring bands also differ.
Calcutta's verified policy requires supporting employment documents and payslips; self-employed applicants need suitable business evidence.
For IIM admission with work experience, prepare examples of decisions, responsibilities, mistakes and measurable contributions. Explain what you actually did.
Diversity points follow defined rules
Academic and gender diversity depend on each institute's policy. They do not replace CAT thresholds or interview performance.
At Kozhikode, eligible candidates receive either the applicable gender or academic diversity score, rather than both added together.
Certificates and extracurricular activities can support an interview discussion. They earn formula points only where the policy specifically provides for them.
How to get into IIM after CAT 2026: a practical plan
Before CAT: protect every section
Start with a diagnostic mock. Identify whether your problem is knowledge, accuracy, question selection or time.
Then:
- Maintain a weekly minimum of VARC, DILR and QA practice.
- Review wrong answers and manageable questions you skipped.
- Retest recurring errors.
- Track sectional consistency alongside overall scores.
- Keep academics and employment documents organised.
Use VerbalHub's CAT mock analysis guide to turn test results into specific study tasks.
For profile building, choose meaningful responsibilities you can explain. A useful college project or genuine workplace contribution is easier to discuss than several hurried certificates.
After CAT: prepare for WAT, GD and PI
For WAT, practise a clear position, supporting reasons, a relevant example and a balanced ending. Follow the actual time and word instructions.
For GD, where required, contribute relevant points, listen carefully and build on the discussion. Speaking continuously is not the goal.
Useful IIM PI preparation tips include:
- Revise your main graduation subjects.
- Prepare an honest answer to "Why MBA?"
- Understand your employer, industry and role.
- Discuss current affairs with reasons behind your opinion.
- Explain gaps or weak marks without excuses.
- Take mock interviews and work on the feedback.
An answer such as "I want career growth" needs detail. What role interests you, why does it fit your experience, and what must you learn?
Where VerbalHub's one-on-one mentoring can help
VerbalHub IPMAT coaching can strengthen arithmetic, algebra, reading comprehension and reasoning habits useful later for CAT. IPMAT is primarily a school-leaver route to integrated management programmes; CAT requires its own preparation, especially for DILR and exam-specific question selection.
For graduates, one-on-one CAT coaching offers a direct way to address individual weaknesses. A custom study plan can spend more time on your recurring errors and less on topics you already understand. Focused feedback can make progress quicker than following a batch's fixed pace, although improvement depends on consistent practice.
Hasan Raja — Hasan Sir — is an IIM Kozhikode alumnus, GMAT Verbal V50 scorer and three-time CAT VARC 99th-percentile performer, with 20 years of teaching experience. His mentoring covers CAT, GRE, GMAT and IPMAT preparation, alongside exam strategy, profile planning and interview readiness. VerbalHub publishes CAT student success stories and named GMAT outcomes that readers can examine.
If you are comparing the best coaching for CAT and IPMAT, ask how your mistakes will be diagnosed, how the plan will change and who will review your progress.
Common mistakes that cost applicants opportunities
Avoid treating a minimum cutoff as a promised call, neglecting one CAT section, using an outdated composite calculator, exaggerating work experience or memorising interview answers.
Also avoid missing separate registrations. Kozhikode's verified policy explicitly distinguishes initial registration from an interview call.
Build your CAT to IIM conversion strategy around three habits: balanced preparation, accurate applications and clear, honest answers.
