IIM Calcutta: MBA Admission 2027, Fees, CAT Cutoff, Eligibility, Selection Process and Placements

IIM Calcutta MBA Admission 2027 - VerbalHub

IIM Calcutta is one of the first names students think of when they plan an MBA from a top IIM. The two-year residential MBA is known for a strong classroom base, a wide choice of electives and career opportunities across finance, consulting, marketing, technology and general management.

If you want to join the 2027–29 batch, CAT 2026 will be the main exam for Indian applicants. A high percentile helps, but IIM Calcutta does not select students on the CAT score alone. School marks, diversity, work experience, the Writing Ability Test and the Personal Interview can also affect the final result.

One point needs to be clear. IIM Calcutta has linked the CAT 2026 notice on its MBA page, but its full selection policy for the 2027–29 batch is not yet available. Wherever this guide discusses cutoff or weightage, it uses the latest published 2026–28 policy only as a reference. Check the new policy when the institute releases it.

Why Students Choose IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta started in 1961 and was the first IIM in India. Its main campus is in Joka, Kolkata. The flagship MBA is residential, so students study, work on projects and take part in campus activities in the same setting.

The first year covers the main areas of business, including economics, finance, marketing, operations, systems, organisational behaviour, human resources, strategy and public policy. Students then complete a summer internship. In the second year, they can choose electives that match the work they want to pursue.

Many people connect IIM Calcutta mainly with finance. Finance is certainly a major strength, but it is not the only path. Recent placements also show strong hiring in consulting, marketing, general management and technology. Look at the full course, the roles on offer, the cost and your own career plan before making a choice.

IIM Calcutta Two-Year MBA

The flagship MBA runs for two years and is a full-time residential course. Core subjects are taught in the first year. After the summer internship, students get more choice through electives, projects and term papers. This gives them time to understand several business areas before choosing a direction.

Application is open to both fresh graduates and job professionals. Work experience is not compulsory for the regular MBA, although eligible full-time experience may earn points at the final selection stage under the policy used for that year.

IIM Calcutta MBA Eligibility 2027

The final rules for the 2027–29 batch will appear in the CAT 2026 admission policy. Under the latest published policy, applicants need to meet these basic conditions:

  • A bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or an equivalent CGPA.
  • Applicants from SC, ST and PwD backgrounds need at least 45% marks or equal CGPA.
  • Students in the final year of graduation can apply, but they must submit the required proof by the deadline stated for their batch.
  • Indian applicants must take the CAT used for that admission year and meet the required sectional and overall cutoffs.

These rules only make you eligible for consideration. They do not promise an interview call. IIM Calcutta first checks the minimum cutoff and then uses a separate composite score to prepare its shortlist.

IIM Calcutta CAT Cutoff 2026

The detailed CAT 2026 cutoff for MBA admission in 2027 has not been published yet. The table below shows the official minimum percentiles used for the 2026–28 batch. Use it to understand the pattern, not as a confirmed cutoff for the next batch.

Clearing these numbers is only the first check. IIM Calcutta says the actual cutoff used for interview calls can be much higher. It depends on the number and quality of applicants in each category.

What CAT Percentile Should You Target for IIM Calcutta?

There is no percentile that can guarantee a call. A General-category student should usually aim for about 99 percentile or more to stay competitive. The official overall minimum of 85 is not a safe target. You must also clear every sectional cutoff. Many aspirants who cleared this range have shared their journeys in our CAT 99+ percentiler success stories.

Two people with the same CAT percentile may not receive the same result. Class 10 and 12 marks, category and diversity points can change the shortlist score. Build a balanced profile and do not treat one percentile as an admission promise — a weak VARC section is often the reason a strong overall score still falls short, which is exactly what our Personalized CAT VARC Coaching is built to fix.

IIM Calcutta MBA Admission Process 2027

The admission journey is easier to understand when you break it into five steps.

Step 1: Take CAT 2026

Fill in the CAT form carefully, select the IIM Calcutta MBA and enter your marks, category and work details exactly as they appear in your documents. Go through the complete CAT Exam Syllabus first so that every section is covered before you begin serious practice.

Step 2: Clear the Sectional and Overall Cutoffs

You must cross the required percentile in VARC, DILR and QA as well as the overall cutoff. Under the latest policy, applicants also needed a non-negative raw score in every section.

Step 3: Get Shortlisted for WAT and PI

After the first cutoff check, the institute calculates a composite score. In the latest policy, CAT, Class 10, Class 12 and gender diversity were used at this stage.

Step 4: Attend WAT and Personal Interview

Shortlisted students write a timed response and attend an interview. Questions may come from graduation subjects, work, current affairs, hobbies, career plans and the reasons behind important choices.

Step 5: Reach the Final Merit List

IIM Calcutta prepares category-wise merit lists after WAT and PI. Admission offers depend on the final composite score, available seats and document checks.

IIM Calcutta Selection Criteria 2027

The institute can change the selection formula for the 2027–29 batch. The tables below show the latest published 2026–28 weightage so that CAT 2026 students can see what the institute has recently valued.

Weightage Used for the WAT and PI Shortlist

ComponentWeight
CAT score56
Class 10 marks10
Class 12 marks15
Gender diversity4
Published total85

CAT had the biggest share at this stage, but school marks and diversity points also mattered. The institute then fixed a separate composite cutoff for each category according to the number of interview calls it planned to give.

Weightage Used for Final Selection

ComponentWeight
CAT score30
Personal Interview48
Writing Ability Test8
Academic diversity6
Work experience8
Total100

The interview carried 48 points, the biggest share in the final score. This means a great CAT result can get you to the interview, but it cannot cover a weak interview. Your answers should be clear, honest and supported by real examples.

Academic Diversity and Work Experience Points

The latest policy gave academic-diversity points to several non-engineering degrees and professional qualifications. It also gave up to eight points for eligible full-time paid work completed after graduation. Internships, articleship, unpaid work and course-based training were not counted as regular work experience.

IIM Calcutta MBA Fees

The total IIM Calcutta MBA fee for recent batches is widely listed at around Rs 27 lakh for two years. The institute may revise the amount for the 2027–29 batch, so use the admission offer and joining notice as the final source before paying or applying for a loan.

Your real budget may be higher than the course fee shown on a website. Add mess bills, deposits, a laptop, travel, daily spending and any optional exchange cost. A simple two-year expense sheet will give you a more honest picture of how much money you need.

IIM Calcutta Placements 2026

The official placement page lists the 61st MBA batch, the Class of 2026, as the latest final-placement cycle. Reports based on the institute’s announcement state that all 458 participating students were placed. They received 542 offers from 202 firms, including 61 first-time recruiters. The reported average CTC was Rs 36 lakh a year and the median was Rs 35 lakh.

The highest domestic offer was reported at roughly Rs 1.45 crore to Rs 1.5 crore, while the highest international offer was Rs 1.1 crore. Such top offers attract attention, but they represent only a few roles. The median salary, number of recruiters and spread of jobs tell you more about the batch as a whole.

Which Sectors Hired the Most Students?

Consulting led the hiring with 206 offers. Financial institutions made close to 100 offers. Marketing and general management together accounted for 161 offers, while technology firms made 72 offers. This mix shows that IIM Calcutta offers more than finance roles alone.

Always check the programme name and graduating year when you read placement data. Salary figures for MBAEx, PGDBA and the two-year MBA belong to different groups and should not be placed in one table.

IIM Calcutta MBAEx: One-Year MBA

MBAEx is IIM Calcutta’s one-year full-time residential course for experienced professionals. The institute says applicants need more than five years of professional experience. It is meant for people who want to move into larger roles, change direction or strengthen their management skills.

MBAEx applications for Batch 21, the 2027–28 class, are now open for Round 1 on the official programme page. Applicants should check the current notice for the accepted test, score validity, documents, interview process and deadlines instead of relying on an older batch notice. A valid GMAT score is generally required for this route.

The MBAEx fee has recently been listed at about Rs 33.5 lakh in programme comparisons. For exact details of the fee, housing, deposits and payment schedule, check the latest official admission notice before applying.

How to Prepare for IIM Calcutta MBA Admission

Prepare All Three CAT Sections

Take a diagnostic test and find out where you lose marks in VARC, DILR and QA. Learn the basics, move to timed section tests and then start full mocks — our CAT Mock Test Series is built for exactly this stage. After each test, note whether the problem was a weak concept, poor question choice, slow work or a careless mistake. One weak section can stop your application even when the overall score is high; the CAT Quant & DILR programme is a good place to strengthen both sections together, and VerbalHub's CAT Live Online Coaching can help you build a full structured schedule.

Start Working on Your Profile Early

Write down your main projects, work results, leadership examples, setbacks, hobbies and career decisions. Add dates and numbers where possible. This short record will help you answer follow-up questions without trying to remember everything after the shortlist arrives. A guided Profile Building Strategy can help turn these notes into a coherent story for the application and interview.

Practise WAT and PI Before the CAT Result

Write short answers on current topics within a fixed time. For the interview, revise your graduation subjects, job role, industry, home state and major news. Practise common questions such as “Tell me about yourself,” “Why MBA” and “Why IIM Calcutta,” but do not learn a speech word for word. An MBA Profile Evaluation beforehand can flag the gaps a panel is likely to probe.

Mistakes That Can Hurt Your IIM Calcutta Application

  1. Treating the official minimum cutoff as a safe target. It only keeps you in consideration, not a promised interview call.
  2. Focusing on the overall CAT score and ignoring a weak section. Both overall and sectional requirements matter.
  3. Calling old selection weights the confirmed 2027 criteria. Always check the latest official policy when it is released.
  4. Entering marks or work dates that do not match your proof. A small mismatch can create trouble during verification.
  5. Using the same Why MBA answer for every college. Show that you understand IIM Calcutta's programme and how it fits your plan.
  6. Mixing placement numbers from different courses or years. Always match salary or offer data to the correct graduating batch and programme.
  7. Waiting for the interview call before starting WAT and PI practice. The gap between a shortlist and interview can be short.

How VerbalHub Supports MBA Applicants

VerbalHub helps students prepare for the parts of MBA admission where clear communication matters. The work can include profile-based questions, answer structure, speaking practice, WAT writing and mock interviews through CAT Personal Tutoring. The focus is on helping students explain their own experience in a calm and direct way. Applicants who also need help articulating their story on paper can look at our SOP Writing Services.

You do not need to wait for the CAT result to begin. A clear introduction, revised academics, regular news reading and a set of honest examples can save a lot of time once interview calls start.
